A Warm Welcome to our Summer Program Participants

The CIMC would like to extend a hello and thanks to the many summer program participants. During the week of June 16th, we hosted many classes as part of the Office of Education Outreach's Technology and the Arts program. Since then, we've also greeted many College for Kids participants as well as many PEOPLE students. Later this month, we host MSPE and Movin' Minds programs as well. We're glad that you're here! Please let us know if there is anything we can to do help.

The Best of Summer

We wish to highlight two of the best things about summer: the 4th of July and camping. July 4th is right around the corner and we have many resources available for you. On display we have fiction and non-fiction picture books as well as activity guides that will help you and your students get into the the patriotic spirit. July is also National Park & Recreation Month, and the CIMC has many materials to share with your young campers. Have a great summer!

Webboard Retired this Summer

This summer we retire Webboard, an online discussion tool used since 1999. Through the years, it hosted discussions for classes and outreach activities for various units in the School of Education.

Obsolescence and the need to conserve energy spurred the decision to end the service. Webboard no longer ran with current versions of Microsoft Windows Server, and the room housing the computer will be dismantled as part of a campus initiative to save energy.

Those who used Webboard are encouraged to continue their online discussions in Learn@UW or Moodle. Both of these services offer conferences and chats along with a number of other activities. Our staff can help in the transition with consultations and workshops. Any existing files can also be transferred. The Webboard discussions, unfortunately, cannot be moved, because they are integrated into the service.

Please direct any concerns or questions about the Webboard service to Chris Dowling. Requets for instructional help with Learn@UW or Moodle can be sent to Chris or to Catherine Stephens.

Dissertation Calculator Helps Provide a Timeline

Unsure about how much time to allot to write your dissertation proposal? Not to worry...the CIMC has adapted a Dissertation Calculator from the University of Minnesota that helps current and future dissertators plan their studies. Users simply enter the expected start and completion dates of their dissertation work and the calculator will generate a plan that includes every phase of the process along with a suggested amount of time for each step. In addition to the timeline, the Dissertation Calculator provides strategies and links to support resources for each stage. Students have been using this tool for almost a year. Try it out yourself and let us know what you think.
