Changes coming to the CIMC: Remodeling
The CIMC was generously awarded a grant from the Parent's Fund. This fund is available to help update and remodel facilities that are used heavily by undergraduates. We extend our appreciation to the parents who have donated to the fund, as well as to Ed Van Gemert and the General Library System.
With the award, the CIMC plans to install over 25 new electrical outlets (improving access for mobile technology). We plan to replace the severely uncomfortable "lounge" chairs on the third floor with actual comfortable lounges (many with laptop rests). We'll be acquiring a number of benches, a new couch and some updated fabric choices. The reference computers will also be getting new homes in pods that will maximize space and privacy. And best of all, we will be tearing out the old wooden desk that used to be the CIMC reference desk, but now serves as a intimidating barrier to our new materials.
On our fourth floor the Instructional Space will be getting a face-lift. Smaller, more mobile tables and wheeled study chairs will improve the possible space configurations. We hope this translates into education environments that are more conducive for small group work.
As well get more precise information on the timetable and implementation of this project, we will continue to keep you up to date.

May: Famous for Flowers and Graduates
The CIMC is thankful and appreciative each day to have such amazing student staff members. So this time of year can brings a mixed bag of emotions for us. We are of course, thrilled to see our student staff successful and graduating, but sad to be losing such tremendous assets. L. Esser to study in Mexico this summer
Lynsey Esser, CIMC student assistant since January 2006, will take a break from her CIMC duties this summer to bask in another culture-- in Oaxaca, Mexico.
"I'll be staying with a host family while I go to school in Oaxaca," Lynsey says, "and that's also a big part of the program, the Mexican culture and Spanish language immersion, which I'm really excited about.
"This is a study abroad program through UW-Madison, so I'll be taking Spanish classes while I'm in Oaxaca. I'll also be volunteering in the area, and hopefully it will be in a school, since I am an Elementary Education major."
She'll live and study in Oaxaca for 2 months, then in Cuernavaca for another 3 weeks. She'll continue her Spanish studies at the university there.
How do you cover the expenses of extended study abroad? Lynsey got a scholarship from the UW-Alumni Association that will cover a small part of her costs, "but," she says, "otherwise I plan on using my savings and taking out a loan if necessary."
And why this particular study abroad program? "I am completing a Spanish minor along with my Elementary Education major, so I won't be certified to teach Spanish in school, but my goal is to be bilingual. Hopefully this experience in Mexico will help me reach my goal!"
A great goal it is, too. We wish Lynsey safe travels and a wonderful summer in Mexico!
