2006-07 CIMC Accomplishments

Increased collaboration with the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) and UW Madison and UW Campus libraries were among the accomplishments for the CIMC in 2006-2007. CIMC activities and staff accomplishment were also recognized by the official publication of the American Library Association and campus recognition given to three CIMC staff members.

Collaboration with MMSD included piloting a delivery service to School of Education students and cooperating teachers in ten MMSD schools. This service supported resource based teaching by providing convenient access to professional development and K-12 materials. The MMSD collaboration also included the submission of a successful proposal to the UW Digital Collections Center to provide online access to 100 years of MMSD annual reports. This digital collection, projected to be available in November 2007, will provide primary source materials to scholars in educational history as well as fourth graders completing units on Wisconsin history.

One quarter of the materials loaned by the CIMC to the students, staff and faculty of the School of Education were made available to our users by other UW Madison and UW System libraries. The extensive use of "Universal Borrowing" across campus and system libraries strengthens the ability of the CIMC collection to meet the information needs of the School of Education.

The CIMC celebrated National Library Week by preparing customized READ ™ posters for 333 people during the week of April 15-21. This promotion was highlighted among celebrations across the U.S. in the May 2007 issue of American Libraries.

Jo Ann Carr, CIMC/IMDC Director, was presented the Wisconsin Alumni Association Leadership Award in May 2007. Anna Lewis, CIMC Assistant Director, was recognized as the Academic Staff Service Award Winner by campus libraries and Renee Disch received the School of Education’s Daly Student Staff Achievement Award.

A full report of CIMC accomplishments in support of the campus strategic objectives is available online.

Please contact Jo Ann Carr for additional information.

CIMC Offers Variety of eLearning Tools

CIMC instruction staff offer help and support to SoE faculty in learning how to use online course management systems. We offer a variety of tools in order to help faculty arrive at the eLearning solution that meets your goals for teaching online.

A quick snapshot of course management tools available from the CIMC includes:

Learn@UW -- CIMC staff help guide and teach faculty in the use of Learn@UW. Learn@UW is a widely accepted tool at UW-Madison, and helps facilitate posting of lecture materials, links to web resources and ereserves, online discussions, chat, submissions of assignments and feedback, a student blog, and quizzing and grading online.

Moodle -- CIMC staff offer Moodle as an alternative course management platform. Moodle's features include a forum for online discussions, (3) choices for formatting the course navigation, chat, posting of lecture materials, links to web resources, and a wiki and blog tool that can be incorporated into assignments. Moodle is patterned after a social constructionist pedagogy, and can be a nice choice for online group work and peer editing of assignments.

Webboard -- CIMC staff also offer a Webboard, an easy to learn tool designed for online threaded discussions.

Mailing list (listservs) -- Faculty and staff can request mailing lists for courses and other special-interest groupings (advisees, research projects, committees, etc.). The mailing list comes with an administrative web page to manage list membership, message archives, and other settings.

CIMC staff can also offer help with Concept Map software, Podcasting, Learning Objects, and integration of online curriculum. CIMC staff are ready to help design solutions, and help with instructional design. We encourage you to contact us.

For more information, please contact Catherine Stephens, Instruction/Outreach Coordinator.

Displays coming in October!

This month, several upcoming events will receive special display recognition at the CIMC.

Locally, we look forward to the Wisconsin Book Festival, held in downtown Madison from October 10 - 14, 2007. Sponsored by the Wisconsin Humanities Council, this annual Festival celebrates Wisconsin's rich literary heritage, brings some of America’s finest writers to the state, and encourages Wisconsinites of all ages to read widely and to participate in the dynamic, interactive literary events held during this annual weeklong Festival.

This year's theme is "Domestic Tranquility" and visiting speakers will explore historical and present-day issues regarding this concept. What begets tranquility? Who decides what is "domestic"? And what role does the government play in protecting it? From immigration and border disputes, to violence and the right to bear arms, to religion and public life -- novelists, poets, journalists, and others will gather to explore what a tranquil home might look like to them. More information on this year's Festival and a complete list of scheduled events can be found at http://www.wisconsinbookfestival.org/

Nationally, the American Library Association (ALA) designates the third full week in October to celebrate Teen Read Week. Teen Read Week is a national literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) aimed at teens, their parents, librarians, educators, booksellers and other concerned adults. The continuing message of the Teen Read Week initiative is to encourage 12-18 year olds to "Read For The Fun Of It." Each year an annual theme allows YALSA to focus on timely topics and teen interests. This year's theme of LOL@your library (Laugh Out Loud @your library) will be celebrated from October 14-20 and will focus on highlighting humorous materials that can be used to successfully reach this group of readers. More information on Teen Read Week can be found at:

http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/teenreading/teenreading.cfm?gclid=CKu2oPuO5I4CFQUsPAod3UGdNQ

OR by searching "Teen Read Week 2007" at the ALA website http://www.ala.org/

October is also the month designated by the American Academy of Family Physicans (AAFP) as Family Health Month. Since proper nutrition and physical exercise are important factors that contribute to good health, another display this month will showcase CIMC collection items that demonstrate how proper nutrition and activity can also work to promote learning.
