Redesigned CIMC Web Site

The last week of August we unveiled a redesigned CIMC web site. The new site is designed with a few goals in mind: First, we wanted visitors to quickly find desired information. Second, we wanted to highlight CIMC resources and services. Third, we wanted to reduce content, especially content identified as "text heavy". Finally, we wanted to brighten and add a human element to the site.

The site content was reorganized and pages were pared down to meet the the goals of improved navigation, reduced content, and emphasizing our services and resources. By the prominent placement and size of images,
we hoped to reach our other goal of brightening the site. We also applied templates shared by the UW Libraries so that we would have an appearance and labels consistent with other campus sites. This compatibility of our sites should also help visitors to navigate. Over the next few months we plan to observe and ask visitors to judge
the usefulness of the site. We invite your comments. Please write to tell us if you find the site useful and what we can do to improve it. Email messages can be sent to cimc-web@lists.education.wisc.edu.

Computers Added to Teaching Labs

This summer we prepared for the Fall semester by adding another computer to classrooms 346, 348, and 356. There are now 13 student stations in addition to the instructor's station. Video was also improved on the Windows computers in classroom 348. An ATI FireGL V5200 card was added to each station. This card enables the rendering of 3D animation with programs like Autodesk Maya and McNeel Rhinoceros.

A set of 8 dual-boot laptops are also available to increase the number of student computers in any of the CIMC classrooms. The laptops can be reserved with any of the four classrooms: 330, 346, 348, and 356. These Apple MacBook Pro 15" computers run on an Intel dual-core processor at 2.33 GHz. The laptops have 2 GB of RAM, a 112 GB hard drive, and an internal optical drive for reading and writing CDs and DVDs. The software installed on the laptops will be identical to those on other lab computers.

Ch-Ch-Ch Changes at the CIMC since Spring

If you have visited the CIMC prior to this semester, you may notice some changes.

Our reference collection was evaluated, which means that our reference stacks have been reduced in number and size. Materials that were moved from our reference collection may now be found in our circulating collections. Our journal collection has also been reduced in physical size.

Current journals are now interfiled with previous issues. This means one stop-shopping for your print journal needs.

Dissertation Proposals are now shelved on the back side of our reference stacks.

Finally, to make room for the Technology Enhanced Learning Grant Teaching Assistants, Room 332 (small study room) is no longer available for reservations. Room 302 (seminar room by the elevators) and our 4th floor instructional space remain available for groups and classes of many sizes.

Where are the Current Journals?

Visitors to the CIMC may notice the Current Journals section has disappeared. Not to worry - those interested in print versions of our journals need look no further than the Journals collection. It was created by merging the Current Journals with the Back Issues to create one collection. We hope this merger will make it easier for patrons to find what they need quickly, whether the issue is old or new.

Additional Staff Available for Technology Integration

Support for the integration of technology in SoE courses is being funded for the 2007-08 academic year through the School's Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Project. The Provost's office has funded this initiative, developed by the Information Technology Policy Advisory Committee (ITPAC), which will focus on expanded use of the Learn@UW course management system. The project team includes three TA's: Alan Hackbarth, Luiz Lopes, and Brian Zoellner whose work will be coordinated by Catherine Stephens and Jo Ann Carr. This team is also ready to help support other course integrated technologies that meet the teaching and learning needs of the School.

Please visit our TEL Project site to meet the project team.

Friendly New Faces at the CIMC

The CIMC is pleased to announce the hiring of many new and talented staff members. For those of you using the Circulation Desk, you may encounter the smiling faces of: Michelle Bass, John Beck, Emily Bouwkamp, Nick Sievert, Tara Radniecki, or Danielle Yanke. When in the computer lab, you may come across the helpfulness of Dan Hickmann or Alyssa Kroes. Each day the CIMC recognizes the critically important role that the CIMC student staff play in making the CIMC a great place for our patrons. Thank you staff!

The CIMC also welcomes Matt Jabaily. Matt is our new Course Integrated Technology Teaching Assistant. That means he is responsible for maintaining the CIMC's equipment collection, as well as for providing instruction on the use of various software and hardware to School of Education classes. Matt had previously been working for the Middleton Shelving Facility here at UW-Madison, and has recently begun his graduate studies in the School of Library and Information Studies. Matt is also a certified Secondary English teacher. The CIMC is excited to have Matt on staff!
