New tables and backup computers will increase the number of computers in rooms 346, 348, and 356 to 14. In addition, another 8 stations can be added to any of the classrooms. A new cart and 8 laptop computers will make it possible to accommodate up to 22 computers in any of these three classrooms. Questions? Please contact Chris Dowling.

UW-Madison Receives Center of Excellence Award

June 2007, UW-Madison was recognized as a "Center of Excellence" from the New Media Consortium (NMC). NMC is a non-profit consortium working in collaboration with college campuses, museums, and centers for Art, Science and Research across the country. The NMC's mission is to "explore and promote innovative applications of technology for teaching, learning, and creative expression." The NMC was founded in 1993 and UW-Madison is a charter member.

The award goes out to "Campus Technology Partners" to recognize Madison's "systemic and comprehensive approaches to faculty support." The award reflects work across campus digital media centers, as well as cross-campus efforts to promote innovative approaches to technologies for teaching and learning.

NMC is well known for its annual Horizon Report which charts the landscape of emerging technologies for teaching, learning, and creative expression. Last Fall Larry Johnson, the CEO of the NMC, visited UW-Madison to lead a ComETS event examining Learning Technology Horizons and consulted with several campus groups. Larry introduced many of us to Second Life - and UW-Madison continues to be a strong partner on the NMC Second Life campus.

To learn more about the NMC, visit http://nmc.org/ online or contact Catherine Stephens.

CIMC Offers Variety of eLearning Tools

CIMC instruction staff offer help and support to SoE faculty in learning how to use online course management systems. We offer a variety of tools in order to help faculty arrive at the eLearning solution that meets your goals for teaching online.

A quick snapshot of course management tools available from the CIMC includes:

Learn@UW – CIMC staff help guide and teach faculty in the use of Learn@UW. Learn@UW is a widely accepted tool at UW-Madison, and helps facilitate posting of lecture materials, links to web resources and ereserves, online discussions, chat, submissions of assignments and feedback, a student blog, and quizzing and grading online.

Moodle – CIMC staff offer Moodle as an alternative course management platform. Moodle’s features include a forum for online discussions, (3) choices for formatting the course navigation, chat, posting of lecture materials, links to web resources, and a wiki and blog tool that can be incorporated into assignments. Moodle is patterned after a social constructionist pedagogy, and can be a nice choice for online group work and peer editing of assignments.

Webboard – CIMC staff also offer a Webboard, an easy to learn tool designed for online threaded discussions.

Mailing list (listservs) -- Faculty and staff can request mailing lists for courses and other special-interest groupings (advisees, research projects, committees, etc.). The mailing list comes with an administrative web page to manage list membership, message archives, and other settings.

CIMC staff can also offer help with Concept Map software, Podcasting, Learning Objects, and integration of online curriculum. CIMC staff are ready to help design solutions, and help with instructional design. We encourage you to contact us.

Come Take a Look at July's Featured displays

As we move into this third week of the summer season, the CIMC continues to spotlight items of interest in the areas of learning through physical activity, the SoEd Department of Kinesiology, and new items being added to the CIMC collection each week.

With the July 4th holiday upon us, staff also thought it might be fun to feature CIMC items that share the common term “USA” in their title. These featured items incorporate a variety of subjects and formats --- from an impressive encyclopedic volume of American history for children and young adults to the CD-ROM (+ teacher’s guide), Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego? (which helps students grade 4-8 learn geography while tracking Carmen and her gang who are stealing national treasures as they travel through the United States).

Everyone here at the CIMC wishes you a safe and happy Fourth of July celebration and we look forward to seeing you this month!

Coordinated through SoE Outreach, the program is designed for students in grades 6-9, and offers exploratory classes ranging from Storytelling and Art Journals, Digital Storytelling, Music and CD Recording, and Cartooning and Computer Animation.

During June and July, we welcome instructors and students with UW Madison's People Program.
