Collaboration: Highlights of the CIMC 2005-06 Annual Report

Collaborative activities with SoE faculty, WCER technical services, the School of Library and Information Studies, the Student Wisconsin Education Association and the Madison Metropolitan School District were key elements of major CIMC accomplishments in 2005-2006. Collaboration with faculty allowed us to identify changes in our computer lab setup, equipment use policies, and the variety of equipment available for staff, and student use. We collaborated with WCER technical services in presenting workshops in NVivo, expanding the reach of our workshop and instructional program. These workshops and instructional sessions provided information and technology literacy skills to over 1300 participants.

A partnership with Student WEA resulted in the development and delivery of a storyhour at the Allied Drive Safe Haven After School Program. In addition, Student WEA, the CIMC, and students in the School of Library and Information Studies, sponsored a workshop and partnerships between students in these two programs. This workshop will serve as the basis of the "Teacher Librarian Collaboration", a program funded by the UW System in 2006-07.

Major collection acquisitions in 2005-06 included Education Index Retrospective, an online database that provides indexing for journals in education from 1929-1983. Items added to the equipment collection included new laptops, jump drives and hard drives.

The aesthetic environment of the CIMC was enhanced by art exhibits by School of Education and community artists as well as a major donation to the CIMC from the estate of ellsworth snyder. Pieces from his collection are on permanent display in room 302 and the 4th floor instruction alcove.

The complete CIMC annual report, including information on the contributions of CIMC staff to campus, state, and national organizations, is available on the CIMC web site at

Proposed journal cancellations for 2007

The costs for academic journals increase each year by 7% to 10%. Dropping subscriptions to some expensive, under-used journals helps the CIMC control expenses while preserving access to those highly used resources most important to curricular support. CIMC staff have identified several journals for potential cancellation beginning in January 2007. Our analysis takes into account the CIMC's base subscription cost; the journal's frequency of use; the subscription's cost-effectiveness; and whether that content is also included, usually in full text, in the University's campus-wide electronic databases.

The CIMC has identified 36 potential cancellations that would be effective in January 2007. Each item lists the journal title, CIMC's 2006 subscription cost, and cost-per-use (at least $10.00 in nearly all cases). Most are electronically accessible to UW users; a "no" indicates those that are not.

Please review our suggestions by Friday, September 22, and notify Jo Ann Carr of the subscriptions the CIMC should not cancel.

CIMC Instruction Provided to SoE Courses

At the outset of each semester, CIMC staff pay close attention to SoE course offerings, and connect individual SoE faculty to offer customized instruction and resources aimed at integrating information and technology literacy into SoE curriculum. CIMC instruction sessions help address information and technology literacy standards. Topics include evaluation and selection of resources for class projects and research, using technology and digital media for classroom work, and effective use of technology to communicate and convey information to classmates and instructors.

Actual design of course-integrated instruction happens in a collaborative context. CIMC staff work closely with SoE faculty in order to compliment course objectives, assignments and course outcomes. Steps include a review of the class syllabus, consultation with faculty about course materials and specific course assignments, and design of course instruction sessions which relate to course objectives. Course sessions take place in CIMC technology labs, or in the SoE classrooms.

Instruction sessions may also include resources posted on Library Course Pages, which allow the posting of library instruction resources in conjunction with course reserves.

To learn more about course-integrated instruction opportunities, visit staff focus areas online, or contact Catherine Stephens at cstephens@education.wisc.edu.
