Pre-Service Teachers and School Librarians: A Collaborative Experience!

On March 27th the CIMC hosted an evening of collaboration between pre-service teachers and pre-service school librarians. The goal of the event was to raise awareness about the many roles school librarians play in supporting school curriculum and overall educational achievement, while also providing both groups with the opportunity to practice collaborative planning. Madison school district librarians Kris Brown and Nancy Kieraldo, along with Madison teacher Amy Treuter presented ideas on how to effectively collaborate and provided personal examples of successful collaborative experiences. The evening ended with the school librarians and teachers pairing up to work collaboratively on real units the teachers were working on in their respective practicum placements. Each participant left with a "toolkit" of collaboration resources.

Art gift arrives at the CIMC

Seven pieces of art by ellsworth snyder, a longtime member of Friends of the UW-Madison Library Board, who passed away in August 2005, have found a home in the University's Center for Instructional Materials and Computing.

snyder's abstract and minimalist style is reflected in the pieces, five of which reside in the CIMC's conference room. In 1993 snyder funded the renovation of the room in honor of his friend Nathan S. (Sam) Blount, a longtime faculty member in the School of Education. CIMC Director Jo Ann Carr said that ellsworth's gift completes the room.

The will of snyder, who eschewed capital letters in his name, states that 150 pieces of his art work go to places where they are guaranteed to be exhibited and seen. The CIMC serves the students, faculty, and staff of
UW-Madison's School of Education.

Special thanks to Louise Halpin Wiesenfarth, Joseph Wiesenfarth, Nathan S. Blount Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,and Thomas Garver, Friends of the Libraries for their generous help with the exhibit.

For more information, please see Art at the CIMC online.

Ugly books, baseball, poetry, and school libraries

As teachers, you plan lessons and research topics for your classes. As you come to the CIMC for help finding books, articles, videos, and more, you will be able to use your own school's library media center when you land that first job. Find out more about school libraries by visiting our School Library Media Month display and by looking over the American Library Association's School Library Media Month web site.

School libraries are notorious for having old, ugly books. However, the information inside is often very valuable. In conjunction with School Library Media Month, the CIMC will display some of our own ugly gems in our "Don't judge a book by its cover" display.

April is also National Poetry Month, and to honor this event, the CIMC provides you with a display of poetry-related items. Want more information on poetry? Check out what The Academy of American Poets has to offer.

In April, the weather gets nicer, the grass greener, and the days longer. A walk around campus usually provides sites of people playing in the sun. To celebrate spring (and the opening month of baseball season), the CIMC displays items relating to outdoor sports and physical activity.
