New Mac Classroom Construction Underway
You may have seen carpenters and painters at the CIMC these past two weeks. They are converting room 356 into a computer classroom and room 350 into an office. These changes are part of a UW System Lab Remodernization Grant that will give us another Macintosh classroom.
The new classroom will hold 14 Mac G5 computers, 2 scanners, an LCD projector, and a combination DVD/VHS deck. There will be the same classroom arrangement as existing computer classrooms with stations on the perimeter of the room and conference tables in the middle. The exception is that the instructional tools (screen, projector, and whiteboard) are all within arms reach of the instructor.
Expect the dust to begin clearing by the end of spring break this March. If everything goes as planned, the classroom will be ready for the summer semester. During construction, computer services staff have been relocated to room 332. Drop by. Room 332 is located on the east edge of the 3rd floor.

February Displays Include Award Winning Titles

Each year the American Library Association (ALA) honors the best in children’s literature published in the previous year. During February, the CIMC will highlight the Newberry and Caldecott Awards in a display of past and present winners. CIMC Staff Bring Stories and Learning to Allied Drive Safe Haven After School Program
As part of a monthly literacy program developed by UW-Madison School of Library and Information Studies, CIMC staff Catherine Stephens and Lisa Teyema visited the Safe Haven After School program at Allied Drive, and provided a story hour and craft activity to school age children Kindergarten through First grade. Working with a Winter Olympics theme, children gathered round for stories about winter sports, and engaged in lessons about Italy and far away places, and spent time studying Winter Olympics sports featured in Torino, Italy in February 06. Story book titles included –
Frozen Noses by Jan Carr
Tacky and the Winter Games by Helen Lester
and
Curious George Goes Sledding, edited by Margret Rey and Alan J. Shalleck
Hello Goodbye Window, by Norton Juster, Chris Raschka (Illustrator)
Craft activities included the construction of a gold Olympic medal, and construction and coloring a booklet about the winter Olympic sports. Children enjoyed round snacks (in line with the Olympic rings) that included Ritz crackers, cheese, and Pepperoni. Special thanks to Lisa Teyema, and all CIMC student staff who helped create this program activity!
