Staff News – Goings
The CIMC is always excited for our staff when they reach milestones. Two of our current Project Assistants, Erika Arroyo and Amanda Werhane have recently graduated from the School of Library and Information Studies. We are sad to report that this news, while happy also means that they will be leaving the CIMC.
Erika Arroyo began working at the CIMC her first semester of her freshman year (that was over 7 years ago!). She was a circulation staff member, a circulation supervisor, a reference desk project assistant and our circulation/equipment project assistant. Anyone who has used the services at our circulation desk, benefited from Erika’s many talents. Erika was very skilled at training in new staff members, repairing equipment, and just being an excellent problem-solver. Erika was a huge asset to the CIMC and we will miss her greatly. We wish Erika the best of luck in whatever her future brings (including her new nuptials!)
Amanda Werhane has been working at the CIMC for the past two years as a reference project assistant. She has made innumerable improvements to our reference training materials, our materials (tutorials / web pages) for patrons, as well as our collections. She has also instructed and devised new workshops for the CIMC. We know that Amanda will continue to be extremely successful wherever she ends up, and we are sad to be losing her and her many talents.
During the past year, Jeremy Todd has been working as a project assistant on the MERLOT grant. Jeremy has been helping to develop a portal that provides ease of access to learning objects in teacher education included in MERLOT. As funding for the MERLOT project comes to a close, unfortunately so will Jeremy’s tenure at the CIMC. Jeremy is currently a graduate student in Educational Policy Studies. We are very appreciative for Jeremy’s work.

Deanna is currently enrolled in the School of Library and Information Studies – working towards her Master’s degree. She comes to the CIMC with a wealth of diverse experiences, as well as a many years of library experience. Please help us welcome Deanna to the CIMC.

New Equipment
Get your extra hard drive space from the CIMC! We have added six new external hard drives (60 GB each). They work with PCs and/or Macintoshes. They connect through a firewire cable or a USB cable, and do not require an outside power source. To reserve one of the new hard drives, please call the CIMC Circulation desk at 263-4750. (Keep in mind you must be a student, staff or faculty in the School of Education).

Borrowing Card Changes (for non students, staff & faculty)
For those currently using Memorial Library’s “blue” borrower cards (formerly deposit cards) to check out materials, there is now a new policy in place. The new policy allows card holders to use Inter-library loan services, but comes at a cost. The new card is called an “annual fee” card and it requires two proofs of Wisconsin residency (one with a photo) as well as a $30.00 annual payment. For many CIMC users, the alternative “courtesy” card will still remain free of charge. Those who qualify for courtesy cards include:
• Wisconsin state, Dane county and city of Madison employees
• Faculty, staff and students at Madison Area Technical, Edgewood and Beloit Colleges. Beloit and MATC students will also need to bring a form from their college librarian.
• Private college faculty in the State of Wisconsin
• Donors to the Library
• The spouses, domestic partners, and children of UW-Madison faculty, staff and students.
• Wisconsin K-12 educators
The Card Registration Desk is in the entrance to Memorial Library and is open between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm Monday through Friday and from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. If you have additional questions about borrowing privileges, or need to determine which borrowing category best suits your needs, call the Memorial Library Circulation Office at (608) 263-7360.

Upcoming Outages and Implications for Interlibrary Loan (from July 1 – 22)
In order to upgrade our catalog (MadCat) the UW-Library System is facing some extended outages. The upgrade allows UW-Madison to convert bibliographic information (stuff in our catalog) to Unicode™ UTF-8 standard which allows for the display and searching of multilingual records. The specifics follow below, but please be aware that if you have an urgent non-article interlibrary loan request or an urgent book retrieval request (campus library book delivery), you should speak with Anna Lewis directly 608-263-8199.
No UW-System Search requests (materials from other UW Campuses) can be accepted or processed between July 1 and July 22nd.
No UW-Madison Book Retrieval requests can be accepted or filled between July 11th and July 21st (for urgent requests – please contact Anna Lewis 608-263-8199)
Library Express (ILL) requests CAN be made for articles during the outage dates. However, requests for books or other materials cannot be processed until the system is restored. (for urgent ILL requests – please contact Anna Lewis)
The Library Technology Group hopes to have all systems back up and all services back in order on July 21st. We will keep patrons posted with any updates. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Summer-themed displays at the CIMC
July is the first full month of summer, and the CIMC has four displays dedicated to this season of sun, fun, and freedom.
1. Celebrate Independence Day by learning more about American institutions. We will highlight books, videos, and other items that focus on American government and history.
2. A second display will highlight items that discuss summer and summertime activities.
3. July is National Park and Recreation month. The CIMC will host a display that talks about national parks and geography.
4. Finally, The American Library Association and Major League Baseball have teamed up to promote a joint program promoting childhood literacy: "Join the Major Leagues @ your library." Taking a cue from their recommendations, this display will look at baseball-related items at the CIMC.

ERIC (Education Resource Information Center) Updated
After more than a year of inactivity, the ERIC database was updated with new citations on June 26th. The new information includes citations from over 100 journal titles and over 50 non-journal (government and NGO publications) sources.
Currently, this information is ONLY available through the Dept. of Education's ERIC website located at: http://eric.ed.gov/ The citations located there only link to the full-text of articles that are freely available on the Internet and NOT those available in full-text through campus subscriptions. It is anticipated that the UW's version of ERIC (through EbscoHost) will be updated late in August.
