The Changing World of Libraries

As a graduate student in Library and Information Studies, it has been my privilege to work at the CIMC this past semester. As you know, libraries are in the midst of transforming services to accommodate a huge influx of electronic material. What you may not know is that behind the scenes your librarians are also constantly evaluating technologies that will help you get quality information as quickly and easily as possible.

Research shows that the majority of people still choose to get their information directly from another human. Your CIMC reference librarian wants to be the person ready to connect with you. Given the 6+ million volumes, 47,000 subscriptions and close to $2 million worth of online databases at the UW-Madison alone, not even your closest friend can help you find what you need like your reference librarian.

The nature of library service is undergoing dramatic change. Until fairly recently, the easiest way to get a question answered or view material was to physically come to the CIMC. These days you can chat with your librarian online (http://www.library.wisc.edu/libraries/reference/livehelp/) or send a quick email http://cimc.education.wisc.edu/help_training/ask_cimc/index.html for help in finding quality sources that you can view from your office or dorm room.

Your librarians want to help. A common joke in library school is that a patron is someone who wants to find good information and a librarian is someone who wants to search. We know it can be confusing in the library world and we’re working on that too. Instructional video clips are coming your way soon. In the meantime, we’re here for you — both to help locate what you need, and teach whatever you want to know about finding it yourself.
