Portable Technology for the Teacher Ed Building

The CIMC is pleased to announce that we have two new "instructor's stations" for use in the Teacher Education Building. Each cart comes with a laptop, (either PC or Macintosh), a computer projector, and VCR/DVD player. The equipment has already been connected so all you need to do is come to the Circulation Desk and wheel it into your classroom. No more fumbling with cables five minutes before class starts! These instructor's stations are reservable in 3 hour blocks of time, and reservations may be placed at the Circulation Desk 608-263-4750. Please email Anna Lewis with any questions.

Two New Tools: Self-Serve Printer and Slide Scanner

Visitors to the CIMC lab can now control their own printouts,
because our favorite laser printer has been converted into a
self-serve printing station. The components of the station are the
printer, a debit card reader, and the computer where print jobs are
released. After printing in the usual way, anyone can go to the
self-serve printing computer, release their print jobs, pay with a
campus debit card, and claim their printouts.

We have also reintroduced a slide scanner into the open lab. This new
Firewire model is a Microtek ArtixScan 4000tf. The device is capable
of scanning at a 4000 x 4000 dpi optical resolution. Scans can be
made within Adobe Photoshop by choosing File>Import or by launching
the ScanWizard software itself.

Technology Integration Services Provide 'Virtual Classrooms'

CIMC staff in Network Services offer a variety of tools to support
technology in the classroom. The following is intended to help
summarize the functionality of these tools to help CIMC patrons decide
which tool best suits the needs of the classroom, project or group.

1. Learn@UW

Learn@UW is a course-web-management program available on the Madison
campus. The program enables faculty to post course content at a
secure class site, create a discussion forum online, create a digital
drop box for assignments, communicate online with students, create
online quizzes and surveys and post student grades. Class members
access LearnUW by logging in with a NetID. CIMC staff assist
instructors with using Learn@UW, and are also on hand to teach
Learn@UW in CIMC workshops.

2. Mailing Lists

Email lists support online discussion via email. Using a single email
address, a member can send a message to everyone in the group. Any
Internet email program (for example, Novell GroupWise, Pegasus Mail,
Qualcomm Eudora, etc.) or web-based email (for example, HotMail,
WiscMail, etc.) can be used to participate in a mailing list.

3. Streamed Media

Streamed media includes audio, video, and animated presentations that
require very little waiting before being viewed. Generally one waits
10 seconds before the audio and video plays. People view the media
using a web browser and a player. Web page links can lead to a live
webcast or an archive, that is, a live broadcast or pre-existing
file. Content can be a live presentation or existing tapes and digital
files converted into streamed media.

4. WebBoard

The WebBoard server supports group communication by integrating
bulletin board, chat, and content delivery. Members logon to the
secure site using a web browser to exchange email-like messages and to
join text-based chats. Course content like PowerPoint and Word
documents can be stored and shared too.

5. SoE Web Sites

SoE web sites are special accounts and associated networked space
where individuals and groups can publish course related web
pages. They resemble other networked spaces one may have used except
the documents can be viewed by web browsers like Netscape Navigator
and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

6. My Web Space

Watch for more information coming soon outlining CIMC support for
using My Web Space. My Web Space, provided by DOIT, provides 100
megabytes of web storage to students, faculty, and staff.

To request a course tool, visit the Network Services home page online.
