Displays for C&I Courses on Africa and Paolo Freire
In the coming year, look for displays of books and other media that tie in to specific courses in the School of Education. For June and July, we've created displays for the C&I 675 General Seminars "Teaching about Africa in Middle and High School" and "Paolo Freire and Education for Social Justice." As always, these display materials are available for check-out.

New Lab Hardware
Three new devices will be installed in the lab this summer: a film scanner, a film printer, and rewritable CD drives. Two are replacements for older devices: the film scanner and rewritable CD drives. They replace devices that were incompatible with the Macintosh OS X operating system.
The rewritable CD drives attach via firewire to our Macintosh computers. Twelve drives have been installed. The drives run at current top speeds: 52x32x52x . The three numbers are separate speed ratings for recording to CD-R discs, recording and rewriting to CD-RW discs, and reading from any CD respectively. These drives record 50% faster than most rewritable CD drives on our desktop computers.
The Microteck ArtixScan 4000tf film scanner also attaches via firewire to a Macintosh computer. The device converts an analog film image, i.e., a 35mm slide, into a digital image. According to its specifications, the scanner captures 42-bit color at an optical resolution of 4000 dpi by 4000 dpi, and it accommodates both 35mm filmstrips and 35mm slides.
Finally, the Polaroid ProPalette film printer converts digital images into analog film images. The attached 35mm-camera back 'prints' the digital image projected by the device. It is capable of projecting images of any resolution up to 8192 horizontal by 6702 vertical pixels at a color depth of 36 bits per pixel (12 bits per color).

Education Resources on the CIMC Website
Click on the “Education Info” link in the left navigational bar to reach a variety of online resources we’ve gathered to enhance your university and professional experiences.
You’ll find 4 sub-sections here:
• “Guides” – Education resource guides and online tutorials
• “Gateway” – Reference gateway to research in education
• “Webliographies” – Calendar of websites for monthly events
• “CIMC Journals List” – List of current journal subscriptions
“Guides”
There’s a lot here, so take time to explore! This is where we bring together links to address your professional development, preK-12 curriculum development, and technological research needs. Recent additions include an online tutorial for the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database, a guide to resources about No Child Left Behind, and a Praxis/PPST test preparation guide.
“Gateway”
A quick overview to conducting research using MadCat to find library materials, databases to find journal articles, and the Internet to find credible websites.
“Webliographies”
A webliography is simply a bibliography (organized list) of websites. The staff of the CIMC create these annotated lists to highlight events and observances such as the Wisconsin Book Festival and Native American Heritage Month.
“CIMC Journals List”
Visit this page to find out which print periodicals the CIMC subscribes to, including our children’s magazines. Hyperlinked titles bring you to the Electronic Journals search screen, for access to those titles in full text online.

Learning Objects Portal Goal of UW System Curriculum Redesign Grant
The CIMC and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Department of Education and Human Services have been awarded a UW System Redesign Grant to develop a portal that provides ease of access to learning objects in teacher education included in MERLOT (see www.MERLOT.org). MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and On-Line Teaching) serves as a national gateway to web-based peer reviewed learning materials that faculty members can adapt and incorporate into their courses.
Jo Ann Carr, CIMC Director, and Susan Cramer, Assistant Dean, College of Education and Human Services at U.W.-Oshkosh, are project directors. They will be assisted by Chris Dowling and Catherine Stephens of the CIMC as well as graduate assistants at both U.W. Madison and U.W.-Oshkosh. Twenty five faculty members at U.W.-Madison and U.W.-Oshkosh will be interviewed to determine the design of the portal. The integration of the portal and of learning objects in teacher education will be the focus of an invitational symposium for twenty four teacher education faculty members from teacher education programs throughout the UW System. For additional information about this project please contact Jo Ann Carr (carr@education.wisc.edu).

Highlights of 2003-04
Reconceptualization of our instructional program, collaboration with Madison Metropolitan School District, updating of our reference collection, and the development of a comprehensive program of displays were highlighted in the CIMC's 2003-04 annual report. Most of our activities last year provided support to campus priorities for advancing learning and amplifying the Wisconsin Idea.
The reconceptualization of our instruction program provided a stronger focus on course integrated instruction, resulting in an 360% increase in the number of participants in workshops and class sessions presented by the CIMC. Serving the needs of faculty, staff, and students outside of the CIMC was also supported by posting workshop materials on our web site. (See http://cimc.education.wisc.edu/help_training/instruction/Resources.html)
Collaboration with MMSD focused on the "Let's play metatag" project which provided an opportunity for faculty and staff to explore the use of learning objects in education. This focus on learning objects will continue in 2004-05 as the CIMC collaborates with MMSD in providing metadata to a collection of 100 exemplary learning objects for the use of K-12 teachers. The CIMC will also be working with learning objects for teacher education with support of a UW System Curricular Redesign grant.
The comprehensive review of our reference collection reflects the increasing reliance on electronic resources as many older titles have been superseded by electronic equivalents. Many of the materials previously housed in the reference collection have been moved to the professional materials stacks and are now available for loan.
The CIMC's display program was the focus of a poster session given by CIMC's reference and circulation P.A.'s at the Wisconsin Association of Academic Librarians Spring Conference. Comments indicated that the CIMC's program to support current topics and curricular issues by promoting both print and electronic materials can serve as a model for other academic libraries.
