Wisconsin Information Network for Successful Schools (WINSS)
Billed as “an electronic "school report card" and much more,” the Wisconsin Information Network for Successful Schools (WINSS) at: http://www.dpi.state.wi.us/sig/ is an information resource for educators, parents and other people interested in Wisconsin public schools.
Of the four main categories presented on WINSS home page, three – “Standards and Assessment,” “Continuous School Improvement” and “Best Practices” – have extensive information about the indicated topics. Most of the information is available as web documents and PDF files. Excel files and other formats are available when appropriate.
The fourth category – Data Analysis – presents considerable information about the state's 426 school districts. Information in this area can be located starting with school name, district name, county name or clicking on a CESA map or number. State data is also available.
Also check the “What’s new on WINSS?” Section. It highlights such resource additions as the “Curriculum Wizard. This on_line resource guides teachers step_by_step through the development of a standards_based course of study . . .” and “Standards of the Heart Assessment Planning Tool. Are you looking for ways to document that students are developing the leadership and interpersonal skills that will help them become caring, contributing, productive members of society?” Both of these items were added in November 2003.
Explore WINSS – you will be impressed with how much information is available at this site.

Of Life Cycles, Evolution and “Graphic Novels.”
Science-based comics? Can they be both engaging and educational? If they are by Jay Hosler, NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at the Ohio State University Rothenbuhler Honey Bee Research Laboratory, the answer is a resounding “Yes!”
The CIMC has two compilations from this talented scientist-cartoonist:
Clan Apis / Jay Hosler. – CIMC PreK-12 Stacks (Lty), Call Number: PN6727 H768 H67 2000 – which follows the life story of Nyuki, a bee with attitude, uncertainties and, eventually, an interesting world-view.
The sandwalk adventures : an adventure in evolution told in five chapters / by Jay Hosler. – CIMC PreK-12 Stacks (Lty), Call Number: QH367 .H67 2003 – an exposition of evolution through Socratic discussions between old Charles Darwin and a tiny follicle mite named Mara..
Both are packed with visual and printed information. Both have clear storylines and characters with distinct personalities. And both will be interesting reads for many people from adolescents to adults. Howard Gardner would approve.
